ABSTRACT

There is no describing the laughter of a child that is taking his first steps. The parents will be clapping loudly during the stumbling gait and the exuberance can only be matched by one other feat of human development, and that is the act of birth itself. This chapter discusses three basic categories of information: the origins and maintenance of power, methods of controlling power, and performance characteristics and environmental concerns that affect the selection of power. Manufacturers of powered mobility bases claim that as much as 70% of all problems with performance can be attributed to batteries. There are three basic types of batteries: gell, sealed lead acid and unsealed lead acid. Most individuals are familiar with the unsealed lead acid battery. This style requires that fluid levels be maintained and there is potential for injury or property damage If the acid is spilled.
