ABSTRACT
The construction of Bittersweet Farms in rural Northwest Ohio has had impact beyond the changes in the landscape and its contours. The effects of the new opportunities created there have spread beyond that physical place. Bittersweet Farms is the dreamed-of opportunity to let her daughter go forth and fulfill her potential as an adult. Beth’s language reveals single-sentence structures without syntactic elaboration. Although Beth is able to talk at length, she more typically discusses topics of her choosing, asks questions about issues important to her, and often perseverates on a subject, repeating her concern over and over again. People in Whitehouse, Ohio who have their own little farms don’t think anything of these kids growing their own vegetables at Bittersweet Farms. A farm is a place where the grandmother has a job, the five-year-old child has a job collecting the eggs, the more capable teenager has a more demanding job.
