ABSTRACT

The case studies that follow address the typical repetitive motion and overexertion ergonomic problems that could have occurred in any occupational environment. One of the case studies, however, addresses signal detection issues as they pertain to a fire alarm system. The signal detection case study is unique because it examines an alarm system that patients, staff, and visitors must recognize and respond to in the event of an emergency. While most industrial settings are primarily concerned with employees, hospitals have a larger population to be concerned about protecting in the event of a fire. Evacuation of non-ambulatory patients is an important issue for hospitals as well as geriatric facilities. Both of these settings face similar issues that are, indeed, ergonomic in nature.
