ABSTRACT
The case study in this section examines ergonomic signal detection issues associated with the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear disaster. Displays and controls have served an important role in ergonomics for many years. The layout and design of controls in aircraft and military equipment is well documented. This particular problem is very interesting because most of the recommendations found in the literature was apparently not used in the control room at TMI.
