ABSTRACT

This paper describes the serious cracks found during a Fracture Critical Inspection on a 65-year-old rolling bascule lift span and how a continuous Global Monitoring system monitors for changing conditions from a remote location. Discussion will include conditions found during several inspections on the bridge, major maintenance rehabilitation to keep the structure in service until it can be replaced at a future date, and Global Remote Monitoring to monitor the rolling bascule girders for changing conditions. With increased demands on inspection personnel and an aging infrastructure, new NDE systems need to be implemented which can help assure safe travel by the public.
