ABSTRACT

A system for remotely monitoring the condition and performance of bridges is being developed and tested. The system consists of small, self-contained battery powered transducers that measure and record displacements, strains, rotations, and accelerations of key bridge elements. The recorded measurements are transmitted via a radio transponder to a local controller near the bridge, which in turn transmits the data via satellite, cellular link, or phone line to the owner agency. The system is intended to provided real time data collection and processing for bridge load testing, and to permit long term monitoring of overloads, consumed fatigue life, and movement of piers and abutments. The long term monitoring configuration can also record and report critical events, such as impact by a barge, which may require immediate action. The data will be integrated into current bridge management systems to provide accurate and timely condition information which will translate into more effective maintenance and rehabilitation programs.
