ABSTRACT

The past several years have seen increased inspection of bridge substructures below water. In some cases, traditional visual and tactile inspection may not give sufficient data to accurately evaluate the substructure’s condition. Underwater non-destructive test methods can be used to gather data to aid in such efforts. To assist state Departments of Transportation in utilizing these advanced inspection techniques, a portion of Demonstration Project 98, “Underwater Evaluation and Repair of Bridge Components”, is devoted to presenting available equipment and techniques in underwater non-destructive testing applicable to bridges.
