ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a broad discussion on the introduction of health care quality in a system. It provides a discussion of the strategic planning process towards health care quality as well as a broad discussion of the stages of implementation of such a process and deals with the lessons and challenges of institutionalizing health care quality in an organization, or a system. Health organizations worldwide are beginning to introduce quality in their care systems. This mainly is due to the fact that providing care — any care — no longer is an acceptable option. Implementing health care quality has resulted in cost savings and a satisfying environment. Quality accomplishments have made patients happier and turned providers into highly effective professionals. In quality systems, care is provided more appropriately and there is less waste and unnecessary rework. Implementing health care quality requires dedication, perseverance, and patience. It requires real commitment.
