ABSTRACT

According to a constructive view of mental imagery, a mental image is less modality specific than the corresponding perception. Furthermore, the content of the mental images evoked may consist of more layers than the corresponding sensory perception. The imagery process is strongly related to memory, thinking and perception. A number of different interpretations of the concept of mental images have been proposed. In the cognitive scientific lexicon, imagery indicates a different process with respect to the imagination. Imagery refers to the controlled and voluntary production of mental images, regarding facts or objects very similar to the perceptual ones, whereas imagination refers to fantasy processes. The beginning of the imagery process is perceptual experience, which allows to represent the object in our knowledge system. Mental images have been considered similar to perceptual representation in our mind.
