ABSTRACT

Today, estrogen treatment is still most frequently used to relieve the symptoms related to estrogen deficiency during the perimenopause. With increasing age, the relative number of users decreases. It is widely accepted, however, that estrogen replacement therapy also has long-term benefits such as prevention of osteoporosis 1 and prevention of cardiovascular diseases 2,3 . Recent evidence even suggests that prevention of dementia and maintenance of cognitive functions could be achieved with estrogen treatment 4 . For long-term benefit treatment compliance is of critical importance. One determinant of compliance is the mode of treatment. Therefore, treatment alternatives with new features are welcomed; a gel formulation, Divigel®/Sandrena®, represents such an alternative.
