ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the evaluation of architectural features of industrial buildings under consideration for protection in England. In the last 20 years, a series of conversions of industrial buildings have been undertaken. The chapter discusses the extent to which the architectural data collected for the purpose of the evaluation may provide adequate information for future management purposes, since management depends mainly on the architectural attributes of the building. Creating a ‘comprehensive coverage’ of the examined industrial building type resulted in the growing awareness of the cultural significance of this building type. This change in perception of the cultural significance of industrial buildings is evident through the constant growth of the number of listed and scheduled industrial buildings and sites. The ‘comprehensive coverage’ of an industrial building or a site is created in the analysis of historical, archaeological, morphological, architectural, economic, social, and other data.
