ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses upon the role of carbohydrate chemistry in the study of glycosyltransferases. The chemical synthesis of glycosyltransferase acceptors, inhibitors and related reference compounds are reviewed with emphasis being placed on those compounds required for the study of selected enzymes which are involved in the biosynthesis ofO-linked glycoproteins containing Galα→Ser/Thr*. Also discussed are β-N-acetylglucosarninyl-transferases involved withN-glycosidically linked glycoproteins, some selected α-L-fucosyltransferases and certain sialyltransferase activities.
