ABSTRACT

At the VIth International Echinoderm Conference, the author had described a summary of our knowledge of the distribution of extant Clypeaster spp. of the Caribbean-Gulf of Mexico area. At that time, the species Clypeaster durandi Cherbonnier 1959 described from four specimens collected from 105 meters sea water adjacent to French Guiana, South America was listed as "in doubt". The author examined one of the four specimens (MNHNP EcSc 8202), a syntype designated by Cherbonnier, and made descriptive comments relating Clypeaster durandi to other Clypeaster spp. (Hopkins, in press). The two species have not been seen since their original capture and description by H. L. Clark from deep water sites on the north side of Cuba.
