ABSTRACT

The small cucumariid holothurians Staurothyone inconspicua and Neoamphicyclus lividus occur on the coast of south-eastern Australia. Both species brood juveniles in the coelom, and in both species most broods are released in November. S. inconspicua lacks typical eggs, and in the brooding season some females have small numbers of large brood juveniles which are often attached to the ends of gonad tubules. Some females of N. lividus have large numbers of small brood juveniles in the brooding season, and in subsequent months some have one or a few large brood juveniles. There are significant size and brooding differences between Victorian and southern Tasmanian populations of both species. An endoparasitic gastropod, thought to belong to the family Entoconchidae, is present in a number of specimens of N. lividus.
