ABSTRACT

The Mtshingwe Group constitutes the lower greenstones of the Belingwe Belt. It includes the Hokonui, Bend and Koodoovale Formations in the west as well as the Brooklands Formation in the east of the belt.

Most of the exposure of the Hokonui Formation is in the region to the north and south of the town of Mberengwa. It comprises a suite of mafic, intermediate and felsic volcanic rocks (dominantly the latter two categories), together with minor sedimentary rocks.

The Bend Formation is a thick suite of mafic, ultramafic and tholeiitic volcanic rocks, most of which are clearly extrusive, and which appears to lie unconformably upon the southern flank of the Hokonui Formation. It also includes minor but prominent banded ironstones and minor felsic volcanic rocks. Many of the komatiites display superb crystallisation textures.

The Koodoovale Formation lies unconformably but concordandy upon the Bend Formation, and is itself overlain with major unconformity by the Ngezi Group. It includes a conglomerate and a felsic agglomerate member.
