ABSTRACT

The first studies of erratic boulders in the area of the Ukraine date from the beginning of the 19th century. Two distinct areas of glacial deposits have been recognised. The first, the western region, includes the Carpathian Foredeep and Volinian Polesie, and the second or eastern area is the Middle Dnieper Basin. The western region glacial deposits occupy a much smaller area. The Oka Stage glacial deposits are the widespread in the area between the Dniester and San Rivers. Within the Middle Dnieper region, Oka Stage glacial deposits are known in the most northerly part of the Chernigov region in the Ukraine, where they occur in the bottom of a deep hollow at Polubot-ki village beside the Strizhen River. Numerous water incisions in the Volyn and Carpathian Foredeep are filled with glaciofluvial deposits formed during the retreat stage of the Oka Glaciation. The Dnieper Glaciation (Saalian, Central Polish glaciation) may be considered as the strongest glaciation in the Ukraine region.
