ABSTRACT

The Middle Dnieper region has been under investigation for many years, but a number of tectonic, geo-morphological and stratigraphical problems remain controversial. The ‘Early’ Pleistocene period has been inadequately studied, although the first alluvial deposits of that age were discovered as early as 1886 by Armashevskij. On the basis of pollen and plant macrofossil analyses, ‘early’ Pleistocene glacial deposits have been preserved in the overdeepened areas of the Dnieper valley. More recently, thermoluminescence dates have been obtained from this sequence. Overlying the till are deposits containing plant detritus. These deposits, which occur as interbeds in grey silts at a depth of 40 m, were sampled for plant macrofossil analysis. It is known that similar deep basins containing rapidly accumulated sediments existed during the late interglacials to early glacials and in the late glacial to early interglacial periods over the areas of the western Ukraine, Belarus and Poland.
