ABSTRACT
An overview is given of the development and of the what?, how?, where?, when? and why? of geotechnical monitoring in surface and underground mining. Attention is drawn to the particular challenges posed by the selection of instrumentation systems and layouts for use in collecting data to serve as input to formal back analysis procedures.
