ABSTRACT

Slope failures within open pit mines in the Western Australian Goldfields are reasonably common. This paper presents a case study of a 150,000 tonne slope failure in the Victorious East Pit at Ora Banda Gold Mine, 65km north west of Kalgoorlie. The failure occurred in a 70m high slope of moderately weathered basalts.

Simple monitoring techniques applied over a 4 month period allowed the recovery of ore reserves and prediction of the failure. The risk to strategic underground development was also an important aspect.
