Survey based monitoring systems are by far the most widely applied method of pit slope monitoring in Western Australia open pit mines. Field trials demonstrate the inherent errors associated both with survey instrumentation and the survey methodologies commonly adopted. Effective monitoring based on survey methods require effective planning, a recognition of instrument precision, measurement repeatability and most important a clear recognition of the type and magnitude of displacements that are anticipated.
