ABSTRACT

The FAO/UNESCO soil map gives an overview of world soils, from a pedological point of view. The FAO/UNESCO soil map of Africa indicates the general range of class precision that has been attained. In arid regions the difference in the pedological and geotechnical view points may not be great, and examples of six soil types from Libya are examined in this respect. The paper concludes that the problems of terminology must be addressed before full use of any such information could be made.
