ABSTRACT

The site investigation for a major project in Central Saudi Arabia required the specification of a field logging system. During the preliminary site investigation it became apparent that the existing descriptive logging systems and codes of practice were unsuitable for some aspects of the arid soils encountered, particularly for the description of the strength of unsaturated and/or weakly cemented soils and the description of the various forms of calcareous duricrust. Descriptive systems were developed to overcome these inadequacies and are presented in tabular form as a possible model for use in site investigations in other arid areas.
