ABSTRACT

Wind-blown sand found in Katsina State, Nigeria tends to disguise underlying ground formations. It is lightly cemented and has a loose structure, with potential for sudden collapse and is highly erodible. Problems associated with the sand have been observed at several small dams and examples are given. Investigation of the sand for a dam at Jibiya resulted in a shift of the proposed axis and use of an upstream geomembrane tied into a flexible concrete cut-off wall.
