ABSTRACT

In the vicinity of the Firan and Tarfat Oases occur fine-grained, loess-like sediments in the mountainous relief of Central Sinai. The geochemical composition, grain-size distribution, horizontal layering, interbedding of fossil dunes, the beginning of duri-crust formation, the existence of salt enrichments and the evidence of fossil vegetation with high water need lead to the conclusion that several changes between dry and wet conditions occurred during the aggregation of the fine-grained sediments.
