ABSTRACT

A review is presented of the stratigraphy and palynology of the early Middle Pleistocene (“Cromerian”) of the Netherlands. Four successive interglacials, each with its own palynological characteristics are recognised at the present date. Correlation with the deep sea record is discussed, as well as that with other interglacials in Western and Central Europe. Of particular interest is the Ferdinandow Interglacial of Poland, which has two climatic optima. In Eastern Europe many other interglacial sites correlate with the Ferdinandow Interglacial Complex. In existing literature its stratigraphic position is disputed. In this paper the lower climatic optimum of the Ferdinandow complex is correlated with the Interglacial of Ø1god/Harreskov and hence with Interglacial II of the Cromerian complex stage in the Netherlands.
