ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the method of non-effective width (NEW) extraction for subsidence control and gives relations between NEW and a new strata characterization index from observed cases. The NEW extraction is sometimes found to give poor recoveries. To obviate this a new method, the goal pillar method, is described. The procedure for designing this method is also given along with its limitations and design constraints. Details of a case study for the goaf pillar method are given.
