ABSTRACT

Succinylfluorescein disodium salt (SF) and 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein trisodium salt (CF) were developed and investigated as hydrological tracers. The physical-chemical properties were examined in comparison to those of uranine (UR). All of these xanthene dyes show similar behaviour, apparently due to their common structure. The various functional groups in the xanthene basis caused only limited changes in their behaviour. However, it would be advantageous to use these tracers for certain applications in which UR does not yield satisfying results. Considering the possible applications and the fact they are environmentally friendly, the new tracers extend the spectrum of artificial tracers.
