ABSTRACT

The static stress distribution on the surface of contact between an anisotropic layered elastic sphere and an anisotropic layered elastic cavity is estimated utilizing an analytical axisymmetric model to simulate contact of diarthrodial joints. The problem is equivalent to a mixed boundary-value problem of the theory of elasticity. In stead of using the Fredholm integral equations, an exact and complete analytical solution is obtained through a system of simultaneous equations. Numerical results are obtained with indication of the effect of material anisotropy of the cartilage layer, layer thickness and joint conformity on the contact stress distributions.
