ABSTRACT

This paper describes the use of computational modelling in evaluating the mechanical response of fixed orthodontic brackets. The method of homogenisation is applied to model the complex geometry of the bracket base where both single and double mesh layers are investigated. Here results are given for the equivalent material properties and it is shown that double layer impregnated wire meshes offer reduce stress regimes. Material modelling is extended to include the enamel/adhesive interface and here a novel technique has been employed to predict adhesive penetration. This method allows the composite nature of the enamel surface to be determined and material constants and validation procedures are presented
