ABSTRACT

In societies that orient primarily to the dominator model, “real” masculinity is characteristically equated with domination and conquest. In addition, both control over economic resources and policy-making is in these societies deemed appropriate only for men. Both women and men are socialized to give high priority to them, and both women and men have important roles in the administration of economic resources and in decision-making, be it in family, religious, political, economic, educational, etc., institutions. The deconstructionist/postmodern recognition that in reality there is no such thing as objectivity, that we are all products of our cultures and our life histories, and that therefore much of what we consider “reality” is a matter of interpretation is certainly an important development. But again, the underlying problem is not science and technology per se, but the guiding ethos informing science and technology and with these, the hidden subtext of gender that has been such strong thread holding together traditions of domination and violence.
