ABSTRACT

There are so many definitions of biotechnology that we do not feel inclined to add to them. Often they are decidedly noble, expressing lofty aspirations like biology in the service of mankind or providing products and services for industry. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book tries to assemble in this book a series of contributions offering a realistic balance between the scientific and the technical contributions, on the one hand, and the objectives of business and the public on the other. Ohas been planned on the assumption that most of our readers will be familiar with the underlying sciences of biochemistry, genetics and microbiology, and are well aware of the many excellent textbooks now readily available.g sciences. The emphasis is on the biotechnology itself.
