ABSTRACT

Nunavut is the homeland of the Inuit of the eastern Arctic. There are presently only two operating mines in Nunavut, both producing lead and zinc. There is also the Lupin gold mine, which is currently moth-balled until gold prices improve. There are four encouraging gold exploration projects in Nunavut. Two of these — the Hope Bay or Boston Project and the George/Goose Lake Project — are in the West Kitikmeot region and two — the Meliadine and Meadowbank Projects — are in the Kivalliq region. There is also one advanced diamond project — the Jericho Project. With an area of 1.9 million square kilometres Nunavut certainly has room for many more mines. Nunavut has many areas of excellent geology. Over half of Nunavut is underlain by the ancient rocks of the Canadian Shield, with potential for gold, base metal massive sulphide deposits, diamonds, nickel and so on.
