ABSTRACT
The high velocities in high head spillways have in the past caused considerable damage to spillway structures. The example of Shahid Abbaspour is used to demonstrate the causes in detail. The remedial measures are discussed. Further the consequences for the design of spillways with high velocities are outlined. The questions resulting from these consequences concerning stepped spillways are formulated.
