ABSTRACT

This article address the education of Geotechnical Engineering provided by national and traditional semi-private universities that receives funding from the country. The results are based mainly on the results of a written survey conducted by the authors to such universities. Geotechnical education in Chile is part of the Civil Engineering career, and usually as part of Structural Engineering. The duration of the Civil Engineering career is 6 years. In most of the Chilean national universities, the number of compulsory courses associated with Geotechnical Engineering are at least 3; Soil Mechanics I, Soil Mechanics II and Foundation Engineering. Nevertheless, in many cases a wider number of lectures are available for the elective group of courses. At the present time, in 2 out of 12 national universities (where the Civil Engineering is offered) postgraduate studies in Geotechnical Engineering are offered and in one other they will be opened in the near future. It is the opinion of the authors that the Chilean undergraduate system includes itself the Master degree. Most of the professors at the Chilean Universities have post graduate studies, MSc and mostly Ph.D. from the best universities all over the world.
