ABSTRACT

Education and application in geotechnical engineering will be important in the new millennium because of the need for modem high buildings and underground facilities. Therefore, we educators should consider education of civil engineering important and we must train the students in soil engineering about new problems of geotechnics. Geotechnical engineering broadly encompasses two branches; Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. Soil Mechanics is founded upon many basic discipline., mechanics and dynamics, physical geology and engineering geology, clay mineralogy, mechanics of granular systems. Foundation Engineering is interested in the tentative selection of the foundation scheme based on building site and structural conditions, and the sizing, reinforcing of the structural elements. These basic disciplines are backed by experimental evidence from laboratory and field investigations and from observations on actual structures. The aim of this article is to present the modem concept of soil engineering, which is the science and technology of soils and their application to problems in education of Geotechnical Engineering.
