ABSTRACT

Soil Mechanics took birth in 1925 with the publication of “Soil Mechanics” in German by the Father of Soil Mechanics, Prof. Karl Terzaghi. The subject had been formally and/or informally introduced in the under graduate curriculum independently or as a part of Engineering Geology course in all good schools around the world in early 1950’s. First texts on the subject were authored by Taylor (1948), and Terzaghi and Peck (1948). Since that time, the subject has undergone a considerable transformation in our ability to handle difficult jobs. This has necessitated changes in the teaching curricula both at undergraduate and graduate levels. Internet has added a new dimension to the learning process in the 21st century. Some of the significant changes will be discussed with examples.
