ABSTRACT

The teaching process in the “Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées — ENPC” comprises three levels: undergraduate, graduate, and permanent education. The first year — designated as core syllabus — is reserved for some general and theoretical courses, then a second year contains five courses related to Soil and Rock Mechanics, foundation & retaining structures, mechanical behaviour of soils, in situ Geotechnics, soil & water interactions. The Report gives more details on these courses, which are either compulsory or optional. A great importance is paid to case histories which are explained in details, as well as to laboratory classes and experiments, for instance various tests on reduced scale models performed on originally adapted equipment. Finally, continuous education consists in seminaries and scientific sessions mainly lasting 2 to 4 days, devoted to various topics, where a number of lectures are presented and printed for the use of participants.
