ABSTRACT

As a teacher in the most important university of Mexico, and the oldest of the American Continent, I have seen from my own experience and the experience of others, how important is the kind of knowledge received by the engineering students, besides the quantity and quality of their education, in a country where creation of new infrastructure and maintenance of the old one is still a national priority. What do we need from the new professors: a very long educational process, and then a life dedicated completely to the teaching institutions? Or engineers with just the minimum years in school and a whole life working outside the classrooms? Shall we choice for either one of those, or shall we look for a middle point where education and practical experience go hand by hand in order to perform a better role as educators. This paper presents a discussion about the requirements we should look and have as a part of this process, and the relevance that practical experience has in the preparation of the new engineers.
