ABSTRACT

Due the relocation of the government from Bonn to Berlin the already high number of passengers of the local transport is still expected to increase. Therefore the network of local public traffic has to be extended. One of the main projects is the extension of the existing line “U5” from the eastern part of Berlin to the future main station in the western part. Because of the sensible metropolitan situation the construction of two stations and one switching station will be done under protection of frozen soil bodies by using the NATM. The frozen soil bodies have to cut off the water and to provide structural support. This is the planning and design of the largest tunnel project worldwide so far using the ground freezing method.
