ABSTRACT

Mineral exploration in Greenland is regulated by the Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum in Nuuk with NERI acting as an environmental consultant. The regulation is based on a general set of rules for driving, flying, storage of fuel etc. Examples of environmental effects of human activities are given for caribou, geese and vegetation.

In addition to the general rules a number of areas have been designated to be of special importance for wildlife. In sensitive time periods for wildlife, mineral activities require specific approval from the authorities in these areas. All regulations can be found on the Internet where it is also possible to zoom in on any area to find out which kind of regulations are in force.
