ABSTRACT

This paper presents a unique frozen backfill design investigation based on centrifuge physical modelling and static strength tests. The study aimed at establishing the most suitable frozen backfill design which would provide superior ground support during mining, or during pillar recovery, with minimum dilution and minimum water run off. The design study considered the material properties, and temperature and saturation effects. The strength and behaviour characteristics of the engineered backfill designs have been established to permit implementation in the field.
