ABSTRACT

A strong direct relationship exists between the underground coal mining activities, strata relaxation, gas emission zones shape and techniques, which could predict and control the quantity of gas released to the underground workings. Coal mine gas could be diluted underground by ventilation system, captured by gas drainage techniques, vented to the atmosphere and/or utilise. Coal mine safety, assurance of coal productivity and protection environment from greenhouse methane and carbon dioxide gasses emission are the most important issues associated with mining activities associated with underground gassy coal mines. New geomechanical and gas release software — ‘Floorgas and Roofgas’ as well as methane utilisation prediction model — ‘Gas emission decline curves’, allow for design the optimum parameters for various gas recovery and methane utilisation systems as well as accurate prediction of gas emission from roof and floor strata gas sources.
