ABSTRACT

The rate of reserve depletion in the Appalachian coal field within the mineable seam thickness category is a cause of concern. Maintaining coal production in that region will require the development of a new technology allowing for mining reserves, which presently cannot be mined because of the required clearance for men and equipment. Presented in the paper are coal reserves data, based on latest evaluations, as well as systems requirements for both the above and the below drainage mining scenario. The concepts of probable technical solutions for mining and material handling are discussed. Characterized briefly are development entries for an underground mining system and ground control requirements with some potential solutions.
