ABSTRACT

A plan for diversion of river water to aquifer recharge and landscape utilization (ARLU) has been proposed to renovate water resources and to protect eco-environment in Qiongshan City, Hainan province, China. The provision of adequate water to protect ecological systems dependent on water resources will be a fundamental concern in the scheme. Utilization of river water may diminish the drought and flood risks. The project will be beneficial to solve the problems of water resources shortage, groundwater decline and saltwater intrusion. The ARLU scheme aims at a sustainable integrated development of environment, ecology, economy and society. Particular attention is needed to avoid adverse environmental impacts from ARLU. Feasibility of the ARLU scheme will be demonstrated by more experiments and tests, as well as observations over a long term.
