ABSTRACT

Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) with reclaimed treated wastewater effluent is being trialled in Bolivar and in Willunga in South Australia. Where the aquifer water quality is poor, ASR system design is not dominated by ambient aquifer water quality but by reuse system needs. This influences the choice for tertiary treatment technology and water quality management. This paper presents the results of Willunga ASR pilot trials, which include the determination of the most appropriate tertiary treatment process. It also describes the successful implementation of an algal management strategy and emphasises the importance of managing water quality as well as treatment when considering an ASR scheme or other reuse projects.
