ABSTRACT

The study deals with the check dams and storage tanks constructed on small streams and rivers in hard rock terrain with a semi-arid climate. It is observed that higher water levels were recorded after construction of the recharge structures. The nature of the soil and thickness of the weathered zone had a significant impact on recharge. Construction of recharge structures at watershed level is very useful in he development of ground water potential. Choosing suitable locations for check dams plays a vital role in the recharge of aquifers. The paddy (Oryza sativa) fields, in the command area of the water harvesting structures, are also adding recharge to the shallow aquifer.
