ABSTRACT

The experiments on recharge in Beijing began in the 1960’s, and the applications in the 1980’s. Both the experiments and applications were the pioneering projects in China. Based on the analysis of present situations of artificial recharge in Beijing, the following issues were studied: (1) the historical changes, reasons and prospects for artificial recharge; (2) the main technologies for artificial recharge; (3) the storage conditions and distributions for artificial recharge; (4) the potential for artificial recharge; (5) the results and conclusions on artificial recharge experiments and applications in Beijing. Preliminary research results show that artificial recharge is an important measure to alleviate the water resources shortage situation in Beijing, and is an important approach for rational utilization of water resources. At the same time, it will mitigate local ecological and environmental problems such as ground water table lowering, ground sinking, riverbeds drying up and desertification.
