ABSTRACT

Existing cavity type brackish water tubewells were retrofitted into aquifer storage recovery ASR wells and operated successfully at five farmer’s fields in Haryana (India). Three types are distinguished: Pump column injection, pipe injection and reflex valve injection. The designs are presented in the form of schematic diagrams, instrumentation and procedures. Additional investment costs were: US$120, 160 and 100 and the yearly additional benefit of the technology is more than 25 times of the investment. Aquifer clogging was not found to be a problem in the injection tests performed. Injection of rain water changed the ground water quality from brackish to fresh. During subsequent recovery for irrigation the salt content increased gradually. The recovery efficiency was still more than 60% using EC of 2dS/m as the criterion. The technology was found economically viable, practically feasible and environmentally safe and therefore is considered sustainable.
