ABSTRACT

In the ovaries of the sea star Asterias rubens, concentrations of total lipids, glycogen, other reducing sugars, proteins and free amino acids show some variation, but in général increase with gonad growth. Except for glycogen, contents of all constituents display a rectilinear increase with ovarian development. Pyloric caeca, however, contain varying levels and consequently also varying total contents of all constituents. The changes observed in the pyloric caeca are discussed in terms of internal and external factors and compared with those occurring simultaneously in the ovaries.
