ABSTRACT

Maintenance of breeder seed and multiplication of this seed for commercialisation of a new cultivar are important activities. Cultivars were often altered or at least adjusted to the locality where the multiplication took place. Maintenance of the cultivar is the obligation of the breeder and it must be carried out in a way which will secure the identity of the cultivar as originally described. In the maintenance of cultivars this problem is less important as the plots are small and therefore may be effectively controlled and cleaned by hand and/or by special equipment such as a row rotary cultivator. Seeds of each component are stored in a deep freezer or similar equipment in order to keep them viable for a longer period of time. The multiplication is organised and controlled by the seed firms. Farmers with long experience in seed production are selected for multiplication of pre-basic and basic seed.
